Tutorial: "The Information Bottleneck Method in Communications"

Gerhard Bauch received the Dipl.-Ing. and Dr.-Ing. degree in Electrical Engineering from Munich University of Technology (TUM) in 1995 and 2001, respectively, and the Diplom-Volkswirt (master in economics) degree from FernUniversitaet Hagen in 2001.

In 1996, he was with the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Oberpfaffenhofen, Germany. From 1996-2001 he was member of scientific staff at Munich University of Technology (TUM). In 1998 and 1999 he was also a visiting researcher at AT&T Labs Research, Florham Park, NJ, USA. In 2002 he joined DOCOMO Euro-Labs, Munich, Germany, where he has been managing the Advanced Radio Transmission Group. In 2007 he was additionally appointed Research Fellow of DOCOMO Euro-Labs. From 2003-2008 he was an adjunct professor at Munich University of Technology. In 2007 he was a visiting professor teaching courses at the University of Udine in Italy and at the Alpen-Adria-University Klagenfurt in Austria. He was a full professor at the Universität der Bundeswehr Munich from 2009-2012. Since October 2012 he is head of the Institute of Communications at Hamburg University of Technology.

He received best paper awards of the European Personal Mobile Communications Conference (EPMCC) 1997, Globecom 2008, Globecom 2009 and the IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC)) 2009, the Texas Instruments Award of TUM 2001, the award of the German Information Technology Society (ITG in VDE) 2002 (ITG Foerderpreis) and the literature award of the German Information Technology Society (ITG in VDE) 2007 (ITG-Preis). He was appointed as distinguished lecturer of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society 2011-2015.

He is a Fellow of the IEEE and serves as chairman of the IEEE Communications Society German chapter since 2013 as well as of the IEEE Information Theory German Chapter 2017/2018. He is also a member of the German Information Technology Society (ITG in VDE (Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies)) where he served as chairman of the committee “Information and System Theory” 2015/2016.

Tutorial: "Communications and Control"

Wolfgang Kellerer is full professor and head of the Chair of Communication Networks in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Technical University of Munich (TUM), Munich, Germany. His research area covers methods and systems for wireless as well as fixed communication networks. Focus of his work is on network dynamics and flexibility based on Software Defined Networking and Network (Function) Virtualization for various emerging systems including 5G infrastructure, industrial communication and energy networks. In the area of wireless communication his research is targeting machine-to-machine communication for low-delay, high reliability, control-aware wireless network resource management. Before he joined TUM, Wolfgang Kellerer pursued an industrial career being more than ten years with DOCOMO Communications Laboratories Europe GmbH, NTT DOCOMO's European research institute in Munich, Germany. His last position was head of the research department for wireless communication and networking, contributing to research and standardization of LTE-A and 5G technologies. In 2001 he was a visiting researcher at the Information Systems Laboratory of Stanford University, California, US. He received his Dr.-Ing. degree (Ph.D.) and his Dipl.-Ing. degree (Master) from TUM, in 1995 and 2002, respectively. He has published more than 200 papers in respective journals, conferences and workshops and is inventor of more than 40 patents and patent applications in this area. He currently serves as an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Network and Service Management and on the Editorial Board of the IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorials. He also serves as a reviewer for the European Commission and several other research programs. In 2015, he has been awarded with an ERC Consolidator Grant from the European Commission for his research project FlexNets "Quantifying Flexibility in Communication Networks". He is a member of ACM, VDE ITG and a Senior Member of IEEE.
